Description: This happened long enough ago that it's no longer a factor.

We pinned the gear and towed off with the left brakes locked, hoping it wouldn't collapse or blow tires.

I guess in the 5 pages of notams for this base, he missed the part about the runway construction.

The nose gear stayed on a thin strip of concrete that had been poured less than 24 hours before. The inside tire of the right gear found the hole but the outside tire ran along the edge of the concrete and supported the truck. The left gear fell in the hole but there was a wooden ramp at the end of the hole to allow equipment to enter the hole. The left gear rode that up and out of the hole @ probably 50mph. I watched the whole thing happen and still can’t believe the gear stayed on.

We have an L1011 experienced A&P and with permission, assisted the crew with changing 4 tires & 2 mangled brake assemblies. The only L1011 brakes and tires in the entire continent had been removed as unserviceable from that same landing gear the week before during a phase. The crew decided they were serviceable enough for a one time flight. We’ll skip over the part about the FOD to the right engine and the damage to the left engine cowling, or the new fuel leaks…the crew wanted out of here and they pressed ahead. Mortar attacks are a great motivator!

They should have lost their gear – but didn’t. They should have been here for a week – but weren’t. Smiles all around.
