Description: This is a tough aircraft. I don't believe we've lost any from the fleet in 13 years of service. The damage is on the other side of the plane. Nose gear gone and main gear significantly damaged. None hurt.

Ken, the 15 Aug AF Times states, ' the crash of an armed MQ-1 Predator on March 30 was the result of engine failure...a/c was flying about 10,000'...with a sudden lost of thrust from the propeller...inspection of plane found that a bearing encasing an engine shaft had failed.' Would appreciate your input...thanks.

I am following any Rotax issues here very closely and am unaware of anything that has any bearing on our community. That's all I can say.

Ken - Thanks for the pictures. No doubt you are now a short-timer looking forward to the end of your tour. A lot of things have changed since WWII and censors have gone by the wayside. I'm sure that picture was on the bad guy's website before the dust settled. With the internet and all the locals working on the bases there are not many secrets anymore.

I've only got 2 weeks before I leave. I can let slip one piece of military info if you all promise not to tell anyone. Today I got issued 2 pairs of black silk long johns to keep me warm in the 120 degree heat ( I guess it's an army thing). So far I don't have flight suits so watch out for the old pilot in black undies.

Chuck Hosack

Chuck, that's funny about the long johns, I got them too. I hear that you might want them around Dec-Feb but certainly not now. If you're here in the wet season, you'll want a second pair of boots. The smartest thing I brought along was a 1' thick air mattress. Put it on top of my bed so the springs don't stick me so much. After a week or so, you'll sleep right thru the F-16s taking off with afterburners going over your head.
I've even slept thru a couple of the mortar attacks. I'll be here until 31 Aug.

I had an interesting view of a C-17 the other day over Lake Chatuge in North Georgia. I was at about 500' agl over the lake after doing touch and go's and looked out and got a real shocker when I saw a C-17 at the same altitude coming right at me. He obviously had terain avoidance as this is pretty low in the mountains and had forward looking radar. He seemed frightenly close but was probably much further away that he seemed. Suddenly, and to my great relief, the monster banked to the left and started climbing. Am assuming he saw me on radar as there was no other obstacle in his path.

Larry, I presume you have a transponder and he picked you up on the mode S. His radar is pretty unlikely to pick you up with the composite hull of a Searey...sometimes being stealthy isn't a good thing.

Yea, I leave the transponder on all the time mainly for other traffic to see me when they have those neat little traffic avoidance gizmos. I notice that ATC never queries my transponder flying at low altitudes in the mountains.

Thanks for posting this, Ken. It should help those of us who have it so easy over here appreciate all the more what you guys are doing over there. If the terrorists think they get any value out of promoting this they are dead wrong. My mama always said honesty was the best policy. I personally believe that the American people are capable of intelligently evaluating the uncensored truth.

Thanks Dan. While I believe a huge percentage of the American people will believe anything they hear or see on the news, there are some who actually think for themselves. I also believe that both groups deserve the truth...even if they frequently have to cut thru a lot of noise to get it. I maintain a private site at myfamily.com for my huge family (non-flying family) and they tend to be decidedly more liberal than I. It has been heartening to see so much support from them, if not always for the war, then always for the soldiers conducting it. They have seperated the political decision makers from the military, which I think the populace failed to do in the 60s. I can't decide if it's encouraging or disheartening that several have indicated that seeing postings from a family member (over here) has finally made them put actual thought into the subject. These are people I love and respect who said they thought deeply about the Vietnam war while it was ongoing, but I guess are too busy to think now. I don't care so much what conclusion they come to, but it makes me mad that someone wouldn't even bother to sit and think about something so important to America and the world because it's actual work to put independant thought into it. As a military member, Frank is correct that I am limited in what I can publish, so I did only use a public domain picture. ...rant over... Looking forward to hoisting a cold one with ya'll after I return home.
