Description: Let me introduce myself..... my dad (also Carl) and I (nick name C.A.) are now officially the part of the SeaRey club. N404SR (serial # 404) was first flown yesterday from X61 and successfully made the short trip north to Umatilla (X23) and then to the small lake behind our house.

N404SR has a 914UL, new style hydraulic gear, manual flaps, & hydraulic brakes.

I have been learning and lurking on this site for several months while our plane was being finished and I already feel like I know some of you from your postings. Let me go ahead and thank all of you for your sugestions and advice that I am sure we will be needing to fully enjoy this wonderful little plane.
What do we need now? I know we need a towbar for the tail (doesn't someone here make them?). What about 3M tape for gap seals?

    Great looking wings! I know you're going to love it. But the first thing you'll need is access to the SeaRey Technical Site, or STS for short. You'll find a lot of info there. Contact Ken Leonard, Mark MacKinnon or Frank Noordhuis (site admins) to gain access.<br />

    Welcome to the group CA and Carl. I use the Taildragger Dragger <a href="http://www.dragger.com/tdd.html">http://www.dragger.com/tdd.html</a> but there is a better design on the technical site somewhere. The gap seal tape is worth the effort. Look on the technical site under 'items for sale - John Dunlop'. Oh, and don't flair too high and keep your speed up on final.

    Thank you all. I spent my first hour in it yesterday evening and had a great time! I read Jack Peter's Flight Training Manual and that made the transition (from a Cub that I spent some time in last week) easy, particularly the use of nose up trim during t/o and landing.<br /><br />The plane will be based out of X23 but it's 'weekend' home will be the small lake in the back yard (due west of Umatilla and east of Lake Yale).<br /><br />We have the Dynon EFIS that has an AOA input, but we didn't get it due to Angel's suggestion. I am sure it can be added easily and I will look into it. What type of gear warning system does everyone recommend?<br /><br />Thanks!

    Nose up trim on landing is not the current thinking. The aircraft should be in trim (trimmed 'hands off') for landing.

    In my limited experience, when at gross weight (my dad and I) and two notches of flaps, full nose up on final is in trim. When taking off from water with the two of us, full nose up is almost nessary to initially lift off (as explained in Jack Peter's manual).<br /><br />When solo and in landing configuration the indicator is about in the middle to be in trim, and the thing practically jumps into the air on take off regardless of where the trim is.<br /><br />Sound right?

    Hey Carl, this is really an STS discussion rather than a Splash &amp; Dash subject.<br />Anyway, I think you have it right.<br />Every SeaRey is different depending on CofG, the power setting on final, and the position of the adjustable horizontal stab brackets. If you are comfortable on final you've got it right. If you go around it is best to be running the trim full nose up as you apply power. On the water (or land) it is MUCH safer to use full nose up trim because the effect of nose up elevator is marginal with the stab positioned full nose down.

    John's right that STS is better suited for discussions like this. He's also right that he hasn't disagreed with Frank about the trim. And Frank is absolutely right about the trim position for landing. What amazing accord! <br /><br />(Later note: I have deleted from this posting a simile that pea-ed someone off.)

    And Frank is right about the yaw string, too. One of the most effective and lowest cost additions on my Searey. And it has heads up display!
