Description:
Out on the fire ravaged plains a jagged scar cuts through the hellish scene. It is just another day out on the Osceola Plain. The “very” flat area (even by Florida standards) lies between the Bombing Range Ridge (Avon Park) and the Eastern Valley physiographic provinces of Florida. The plain is dominated by a diversity of grasses, saw palmettos, low shrubs and forbs with between 100 and 200 species of vegetation per acre. The soil is sandy, acidic and nutrient poor. Underlying hardpan prevents percolation of water and results in lots of standing water in circular solution depressions. During the dry season, it is like a desert. During the rest of the year is very, very wet. Many special species of animals and birds hang out here, including the magnificent sandhill and whooping cranes, the rare Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, indigo snakes and even an occasional Florida panther. Unfortunately, 88% of this habitat has been lost due to drainage ditches dug by the Corpse of Engineers and agricultural interests. There is just a little bit of wild left.
To keep exotic species out the locals and government types have become arsonists. Using a technique known as “aerial ignition,” fires are set by helicopter. One of these fire-dribbling dragons was working nearby as I flittered the afternoon away.
