Description:
Fortunately there was no worst yet to come. I found Payne Field exactly where it was depicted on the map. I could see Jay standing on the taxiway waiting for his new toy. The 2300’ strip ringed by trees didn’t even look too scary.
The welcome was warm. Linda, Jay’s wife, fixed me up with some toasty muffins, hot tea and a warm, dry winter coat. Florida blood is just too thin for 50 degrees and rain this early in the fall.
Time was short due to a scheduled flight out. I went through a rapid fire debriefing. Fortunately Mark showed up to help me out.
The briefing continued all the way to the airport in Portland. We were lucky to be driving because the ceiling was one with the ground in mist, fog, rain and general yuk.
The nice dry regional jet did not care. I was back home in Florida before the sun set.
The trip statistics are as follows:
Winter Haven (GIF) to Payne Field (ME47):
Moving average groundspeed: 61 knots (70 mph)
Total Miles: 1351 nm (1555 statute miles)
Total Flight Hours: 21.4
Total Smiles Per Mile: Unquantifiable.

I'm not sure how much I 'helped', Dan. Because I like to talk Searey stuff, I may have slowed you down a bit. Jay correctly reminded me that you guys were on a tight schedule.

I'm not sure I mentioned this, but I actually did take off from Old Town airport and tried to fly down, but immediately hit the rain which wasn't predicted until later in the afternoon. That meant the crap was moving in faster, with worsening conditions possibly trapping me at his field. I landed back at Old Town and put it snuggly back in the hangar, and drove down. At any rate, I was glad to meet you before you had to get going.
