Description: Art and I followed Tommy, the boat guy, back to his place near Flowerdew Hundred, about 20 miles downstream.

The boat has a 125 hp outboard motor and will do about 50 mph. He tows hang gliders behind it--up to 4,000 feet and higher! I'm hoping for a copy of the pic he took just a few seconds later, as we zoomed over his head.

Small world Don. Tommy is friends with my buddy, Steve, who tows hang gliders on Claytor Lake. Tommy has us beat on altitude. The highest we have gotten is 2500 ft above the lake under tow. (4350 msl, however)

I think his secret is in the tow line. He uses something super-strong and small diameter--and expensive. But he's also got you beat MSL to AGL. His record--if I heard him right--is a few feet less than 5,000 MSL--and that's starting at close to 0' MSL.

We use the same stuff. It is called 'spectra'. It is about 1/16 inch diameter and is rated to 1500 pounds. We just need to put more of it on our drum. At around 12 cents a foot, a couple thousand feet ain't cheap!

Did you give Tommy a Searey ride? Steve and I have been talking about comming down to visit him but haven't found time. I want to be retired soooooo bad.

Yes, that's the stuff--spectra. He rides next time. He has enough beach for several SeaReys. Bring a pile-driver along. His home-made one isn't doing too well on those I-beams (in the next photo) that he hopes will keep future hurricanes from washing out any more of the riverbank. Another ten feet, or so, and his house is going to be a cantilever.
