Talking about cliff take offs, I remember taking off from the side of a volcano in a C-130 Hercules around 1986. After walking the length of the newly bulldozed runway, the engineer said we were too heavy what with the bulldozer we picked up after we landed and the altitude (over 10K MSL) but the pilot said we had a mission to complete. We ran off the part of the 'runway' the bulldozer had cleared and started bounding along the volcanic rocks before the pilot jerked us in the air and dropped a wing down the mountain. We 'fell' down the volcano at below 50' agl until we had flying speed. I was sitting behind the engineer and when his fingers are dug into the chair and he's mumbling to himself, it makes me nervous. I told the pilot he could help me fix the damage when we got back home.
