Description: Yesterday Carol and I landed in the James River for lunch at the Dockside restaurant. The river was as glassy as it ever needs to be, and even though I made two passes before deciding to land, I still screwed it up. There was a moment of exhilaration and some spray, but no harm done, and another lesson learned.

We had the restaurant's deck to ourselves, although the sun was warm and the air temp in the low 60's.

The view from that deck is somewhat troubling--beautiful and serene in most directions, but directly across the bay is a noxious chemical plant (which always shows the wind direction). To the north is the Benjamin Harrison Bridge, the only way to drive across the James River between Hopewell and Newport News, more than 80 miles by road (50 nm by air).

It really was glassy, Dennis. (What might look like waves in the photo are file-compression artifacts.) Furthermore, the tide was completely out, and the water was very shallow until about 150 meters from shore, all the way around the bay, so I had to land out where there was no useful visual reference. Then I rushed it a bit, and the landing was not a pretty one. I won't try that again.

Those conditions would justify landing directly under the bridge--although even then it might be hard to convince a federal bureaucrat of the necessity.

The chemical plant adds drama to the serene scene, Don. Nice. Very nice.

Super panorama, Don - unlike anything I'll be able to see anywhere near here!
