Description: Nothing here to do with splashing or dashing, but I ran across this on my PC and it brought back some memories... So what's wrong with this picture? What is right is that the L1011 is still on its gear, which was a miracle. I watched this happen and none thought it would come out of the hole. Take a close look at the end of the over 2' deep hole - a wooden ramp to get construction vehicles in/out! He rode that out at 60 knots. The nose gear ran along the center section concrete that was poured that morning. I've got some more pix of the aftermath if anyone is interested. The General was not a happy man and oh, did he let me know it.

So, what happened, was this after landing on a wrong runway?

And why was the general mad at you, or was he?

Sure looks like the left gear tore up a jagged piece of metal. What was the end result damage to the plane?

There was only one runway (the other had about 150 helos parked on it) and that is why the General was upset, because he needed to be able to fly F-16s to support troops in contact if the alert went up. I caught the flack because I was responsible for all heavies (non-pointy noses) on base. He stabbed his finger into my chest and bellowed: 'You've got one F*&$@ hour to clear my runway or I'll blow that thing up!' And to emphasize the point, he had the explosives guys standing by the side of the runway with C-4 and bulldozers. No kidding. We dragged it just off with the wheels locked in under an hour. F-16s were taking off 5 minutes later.

The one working runway was under construction near the end but the crew of this L-1011 didn't see that note burried in the five typed pages of Notams for Balad. (I guess the part about regular and accurate shoulder fired missles and automatic weapons fire on short final drew thier attention away) Anyway, they landed long and hot and didn't see the hole until it was too late. I watched from my Hummer on the taxiway with my jaw hanging open like an idiot. The metal was a form for the concrete. IT ate up the tires and brakes - we had a old set of wheel trucks flown in that night and replaced by the next morning. He departed despite significant FOD to two engines (fist sized rocks), no brakes (we capped the brake lines) sheet metal damage, blown seals on his left gear leg, fuel leaking from 100 places on the left wing and soiled seat cushions. I guess the two rocket attacks during the night motivated the crew to go despite my best admonition that they wait for further repairs. We weren't even legally allowed to work on a commercial plane, but when things are going boom, rules get bent. Just another day in Balad. ; ) (Oh, we DID have a plane miss the runway and try to run down one of my maintenance trucks on the taxiway, but that was only a drunk Russian crew and a completely different day...)

Ken, so let me get this straight. You put a big hole in the only runway and then............? I encountered oopsies like this more than once at Balad, a favorite refueling stop on jaunts to Bahgdad. When my generals in the back got upset I always blamed it on the AF, a cop-out the the army generals readily accepted. Besides being in a helo we don't need no stinkin' runway anyhow.

The multi-national pilot folks led to a lot of laughs. A favorite idle time activity at Mosul was betting on whether the daily UPS plane could land without stting the brakes on fire.

Hey Chuck! Everyone else had been using that runway with the hole in it for months! It was near the end anyway. ...Except the pair of Guard F-16s who tried to land in it on thier first approach. The tower told them to go around with a few seconds to spare - that almost got them sent home before they ever made it onto base. You've seen the C-130 that did that at another base, right? Not much left but parts. At least they did it at night and with no Notam published. The L1011's brakes were welded onto the rotors. We spent hours smashing them off with sledge hammers before we could put on the spare wheels/brakes. Attachments:
