Hi Terry:

I did not take the pictures. Probably taken by a crew member.
Indeed the last picture does show a very solid wall of water breaking over the port side of the ship.

When I was younger, I chased Olympic medals in sailing, so I had the opportunity to sail in a great many locations all over the world. The three worst places for huge waves and ugly conditions for me (in order) were:

English Channel. Can't put into words how rough that body of water can be. Sailed there in a world championship where in a single race, only 15 boats finished out of 80 that started.
Hawaii. Huge waves.... so high that you lost site of the competitors around you if they were in a trough..... but at least you could sail them, as the distance between them was large and the winds were steady.
Kingston, Ontario. Located at the eastern end of lake Ontario (I'm at the western end), the geography can generate huge waves and big winds (due to 'thermal effect'). Waves 10 to 15 feet are typical in a good blow and they are remarkably steep and close together. Beats boats up with stunning efficiency. (g)

Best,
Larry

larry, The lake entrance to the ST Laurance is incredable. Slap you silly. Last time I stayed at Main Duck the inlet was packed with some impressive boats. Hiding and recovering from getting the crap beat out of them comming down from the Welland. And if that isn't enough shoals galore.
