Yeah, Rick, I think that's right. The guy had already burnt a perimeter and was then just lighting the interior. I understand that there's a need to burn stuff now and then, but it always irks me when I see it from the air, especially if there's an inversion that holds the smoke low. Sometimes you can track it for 50 or 100 miles close to the ground. That's when it's easy to see how the smoke we make affects the air we breathe and the climate. It's more dramatic even than seeing that brown layer of haze that sits on the horizon nearly every day in this area.

In Western Canada they burn off the Flax, I understand it takes years for it to decay if you don't. Flax is a prime ingredient for making paper money, must be tough stuff.

Unfortunately for us pilot types, the best time to burn is when the wind is light, conditions good for temp inversions are also great times to burn. I have some timberland that gets burned about every 3-4 years, and you have to wait for those 'perfect' conditions. Talk about mixed emotions!
