Description: Moonrise over Blue Wing Flats (dry lake bed) about 45 minutes north of Reno, NV, temperature-high 85ºF, low 55ºF, humidity 6%, total silence, no mosquitoes or gators. We had the whole place to ourselves. Dinner was beef stroganoff with Yellowtail shiraz.

    Is that salt or sand John &amp; it must have been a suprise to to see the airspeed drop off like a glassy water.

    Around this part of Nevada these dry lake beds can be alkalai salts or fine dust with the consistancy of talcum powder, which this one is. You can see it on the tires. The winter rains produce a shallow lake with the dust turning to a mud. When the lake dries, the surface cracks into large firm blocks. The winds blow off any dust and the surface looks shiney in the moonlight. See the next photo for a better view of the cracked surface. I would imagine there are lots of these in Australia too.
