Beautiful wilderness, John! And it doesn't look all that far below your 12,500 feet, either.

It wasn't that far below, but then there are lots of lakes for emergency landings, so I wasn't concerned. The nice thing about this area, there is nothing in the lakes that will EAT you, like alligators!

I'm wondering John, how you even get to 12,500' with the umbrella, launge chairs, binocs, tent, 2 POB's, and the
kitchen sink.

No tent. It was a day trip! Actually the Rotax 914 does fine. My airport is about 5000'msl, so I am almost half way to 12,000' and I pitch the prop for 55-5600rpm at takeoff. Most of the passes are 7,000 to 9,000' msl. Our weight at this time was 1395 lbs as we had been flying for an hour. Of course when I go down to sea level I only get 5000rpm for takeoff, but it works fine at sea level!

    Dang, John...

What awesome landscape... I need to show this picture to my wife... she's a reluctant flier, but if she could see sights like that...

It just gets better! Here are some the wife took from her Searey seat this morning over the Sierras and on our way over Yosemite to breakfast at Pine Mountain Lake airport (E45). Give your wife a heater and one of those comfortable Tempress seats and she will be happy. Attachments:

John- how does the 914 perform at 12,500 ft? How high have you taken it? I get spoiled with the performance at sea level and would think that because it is not turbo normalized it you be quite a performance loss at altitude.

Not having an inflight adjustable prop is the problem, not the 914. An in flight adjustable prop is needed take FULL advantage of the 914's ability to get full power of 115 hp (39.9 in.Hg) to 8000 feet and climb power of 100 hp (35.4 in.Hg) to 16,000 feet. I pitch my prop for 5600 rpm at my airport's takeoff density altitude of around 6000 feet, which gives about 5300 rpm when setting climb power of 35.4 in.Hg. after takeoff. by 9,000 to10,000 feet the rpm will exceed 5500 rpm (climb power limit) unless the throttle is pulled back. By the time it gets to 12,500 feet msl the power is back to about 31.0 in. Hg. at 5500 rpm. At sea level with summer time temperatures giving a 1,000 to 2000 ft. density altitude full throttle only gives me about 38.0 in.Hg. and 5000 rpm, but that is more than adequate. An IVO or Woodcomp with an easily adjustable ground pitch would be better than my Kiev, which is about the same difficulty to repitch as a Warpdrive. An inflight adjustable would be best.

I usually only fly that high to give me more options over the mountains, but then there are usually lakes below that could be used in an emergency. Here is Yosemite Valley from from over Tioga Pass (highway 120) looking west this morning at about 13,000 feet with light winds aloft and no turbulence. I pick the best days to fly over the Sierras! The lake in the right foreground is Tenaya Lake at 8150 feet elevation. I used to windsurf on it. Attachments:
