My dad worked at Picatinny Arsenal. The older buildings had wooden slides at every 2nd story window so when things started to go bad, everyone actually did dive out the windows! Those buildings weren't used any more but it was enlightening to this kid. The 'bunkers' where they stored stuff were covered with soil. Every once in a while, something did go bang and one time, we had to go to the halls in our school to get away from the windows until a fire at the arsenal was contained. Our school was more than 5 miles from the arsenal but they had big stuff there. They had caves they tested the big guns in and you could feel the shock sometimes. Back in the 70's, Dad brought home a copper curliecue that they were experimenting with. He said it had gone thru tank armor. They are still going thru armor today in Iraq; called 'explosively formed penetrators'.

Rock Island is still rocking along as a military manufacturing facility, Charlie.

Picatinny in New Jersey is too, and seems to be a favorite for would-be terrorists.

Just up the river from Rock Island is the old Savannah Army Proving Grounds. This was the Army's equivalent to Area 51. It has been retired but it still has acres and acres of grass covered bunkers. Spooky looking place.
