Your picture is a lot clear than mine, Judy. We've been covered in a particularly heavy haze the past few days.

Your pictures are good--every launch--and you have the opportunity for closeup viewing which unfortunately comes with grounding due to the Shuttle TFR; well, can't have everything. A little while before 9/11 my Grandson and I did a low approach to the Shuttle Landing Strip, a neat experience probably gone forever.

Yes, Frank, the 'Shuttle Tour' is history. Glad you got to do it... It was really neat. There's no security reason for it, just like the Disney restricted area. When I finish Swoosh Too, I might just have to have an engine failure and land in the Seven Seas Lagoon... or not, Disney has their own police force and government. I might get locked up with Walt in Cinderella's Dungeon!

Jim, I've heard that engine failures come in many varieties, sometime only 'erratic' oil pressure readings, sometimes high temps in Florida, etc. It's always wise to make pre-cautionary landings. On the other hand it's also wise to be sure you won't have to disassemble the SR and hire a U-Hual to take off after the problem is resolved.

I agree that the Shuttle Tour was neat. With some imagination though, I can assume that even a GA aircraft with a Kamikazee pilot could do some serious $$ damage to the Shuttle infrastructure (VAB, OPF, etc.). So I guess in our new crazed world, the Shuttle Tour is OTS. Will it ever return? Not before the Shuttle is finished, that's for sure.

    Terrific photos, Judy and Dan.

Too bad about that tour! They sure have made the airspace unfriendly. I've been looking at the sectional, wondering if there's some way to get close. R-2932, R-2933, and R-2934 look formidable--but I wonder if anyone has tried calling Miami ARTCC or KTTS tower to ask.

Attachments:

A low pass over the shuttle landing facility may no longer be allowed. I don't know. I haven't asked in the last several years. It was, however, still an option even after 9-11-01 (but only if the shuttle was out flying or inside the VAB). It would be easy to check. Just make sure the restricted areas are inactive (or you are below their base). The NASA tower people are friendly folks. The frequency is on the chart.

As for landing on Disney property, I know a couple of Buc II pilots that did it (without prior authorization as is required for private lakes). Several Disney patrol boats immediately launched to intercept them. One of the Buc pilots pre-emptively launched and escaped. The other waited to see what happened.

Security people in the boat aggressively moved in and grabbed the wing of the waiting Buc. They informed the pilot that he was trespassing and ordered him to accompany them to the shore. He said 'okay,' but they would need to release the wing so he could taxi in. As soon as they released the wing, the pilot went to full throttle and escaped.

Apparently the security folks didn't see the small registration numbers because nothing else came of the episode.

Dan, I don't believe a low pass over the shuttle area is allowed. Bruce & I had a one and only chance with a few thousand other bikers, to ride up and down the runway of the shuttle site. We were riding in a Poker Run and the group talked with the shuttle people, and they allowed this to happen......but it was the first and last time they ever allowed it. This was about 7 or more years ago!! I have pictures somewhere , I'll have to try to dig them up. Judy

They may have changed the policy since last I did it, Judy (sometime in 2003). It may also depend on who and when you ask. In any case, public records indicate that you can contact the facility manager (Robert Bryan) at 1-321-867-2100 and make the request. Heck, with the shuttle retiring I heard they were looking to rent it out. Ask if you can use the 'gator tanning facility.' They are the most frequent users.
