Description: The locals prefer to arrive to the south--uphill--and depart to the north. But the wind was too strong for that, so we all had a chance to see 'that #@$% pole' up close on short final. It looks as if it's going to reach up and snag you. But no, it's actually below the level of the runway.

It looks like the #1 wire for the tailhook.

It was a goofy illusion. The runway slopes up on that end for a few hundred feet as you approach and then slopes down for the remaining 2,500 or so feet. The pole--just an ordinary telephone pole--seemed to be sticking way up in the air, but as soon as you got close to it, it just sort of disappeared. The locals prefer to land from the other direction, but the wind that morning prevented that.
