Description:
Flagstaff is located just south of a bunch of old volcanoes known collectively as the San Francisco Peaks. Humphreys Peak, the highest peak in Arizona at 12,633’) is the large mountain in the background.
Just west of Flagstaff was a small area of restricted airspace (R-2302). This covers the munitions storage area of the former Navajo Army Depot. The site formerly stored both conventional and chemical weapons. During the base re-alignment of the 1990’s it was slated for shutdown. It was handed over the National Guard. The National Guard proceeded to make a business out of renting out the fine munitions storage facilities to the active military. It is now one of the few Guard units to actually make money. “Now let me get this straight….the Congress shut down the military base, gave it to the state, who now rents out the facilities to the military?” Yep . Your tax dollars at work. There are even ICBMs stored at “Camp Navajo” now….at a good profit! Priceless.
The tracks running past Camp Navajo is part of the famous “Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe” Railway. (“Do you hear that whistle down the line? I figure that it's engine number forty-nine, She's the only one that'll sound that way. On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe” as only Judy Garland could sing it.)
