Description:
A quick and easy fueling stop in Winslow was in order (as the Eagles say, “Well I’m standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, and such a fine sight to see, it’s a girl, my lord, in a flatbed Ford slowing down to take a look at me…”). Just to the north is the home of the Navajo Nation.
The multicolored hills of the Chinle Formation contain a clay of volcanic origin, “bentonite.” Swelling is a predominate characteristic of bentonite exposed to water. It radically shrinks as the moisture leaves. All this yo yo dieting is particularly bad for plants, but is good for creating an uncovered landscape.
