Description:
The thing about following Interstate Highways is that it gets pretty boring. Not far off the highway was Santa Rosa Lake, so I deviated to investigate.
The lake wasn’t bad. Up ahead, however, was a lake with a seaplane base: Conchas Lake. I figured that would be even more interesting. I deviated even more to the north and away from my concrete navigational aid.
Conchas Lake marked the start of the Canadian River. The river headed mostly eastward in the way I wanted to go. I decided that would be a much better guide for a seaplane than a road.
The Seaplane Pilots Association guide warned of stumps and rocks, especially when the reservoir is low. It wasn’t much of a problem for the SeaRey to find a suitable splash-in place though.
The sectional map showed a resort on the eastern shore. That would be a perfect place for over-nighting I figured. Unfortunately it was obviously closed.
It was getting too late in the day for a lot of exploration, so I deviated back towards the road and the Tucumcari airport. A friendly attendant made a place for me in the hangar and called the local hotel for a ride into town.
The daily log: Kingman (IGM) to Winslow (INW), AZ, 2.2 hours Winslow to Double Eagle (AEG), Albuquerque, NM, 2.8 hrs. Double Eagle to Conchas Lake to Tucumcari (TCC), 2.5 hours, Total Fine Flying Time of 7.5 hours
