Description: The briefer spoke of a fine day with blue skies and gentle winds. The view from the hotel window argued for a different forecast.

My ride to the airport was as gloomy as the weather. The driver lady said that the population of Tucumcari had been cut in half by the closure of the railroad station and some trucking companies. “We have a hard time getting help at the hotel,” she said, “because no one can pass the drug test.” The air had an autumn like chill to match the conversation.

I-40 was the most direct path. The Canadian River was north. I went north. Under low clouds I splashed down in the Ute Reservoir to start the day off in a seaplane kind of way.
