Description: There wasn’t much water showing in the river, but it made sightly twists on the sandy bottom. Just north of the river is a caprock escarpment. The rock is caused by cementation of sandy soils due to mineral laden groundwater rising to the surface and evaporating. The cliffs mark the northern boundary of Llano Estacado, a large, mostly flat mesa that stretches 250 miles to the south of the river. It is a southern portion of the Great Plains.
