Description:
Tan, white, red, and green all mixed together down in the lake. Not far away the Hutchinson County airport in Borger, Texas made for a convenient fueling stop.
On approach I selected gear down for an airport landing. Nothing happened.
Hmmm….I checked the circuit breaker and it had indeed popped out. I pushed it back in and tried the switch again. The gear didn’t move and the circuit breaker popped again.
I took a moment to ponder the situation. I certainly didn’t want to land someone else’s airplane gear up. I turned to head back to Lake Meredith.
Lake Meredith is officially closed to seaplane operations. I figured I had a good excuse to splash down there anyway.
Before making a political statement I decided to see if I could find a problem with the gear. I checked behind the seats and looked at the microswitches. They were wet.
“Dern.”
Well, I decided I’d just try and dry them off. I did. Holding my breath, I switched the gear to the down position. Down it came.
Now, there is no way a wet microswitch should cause a 30 amp fuse to pop. I decided it didn’t really matter as long as the gear extended. It never happened again so obviously the fervent praying fixed it.
The airport was bustling with activity. A large jet had just landed. “That’s the biggest jet I’ve ever seen here,” the lineman offered. “Yeah,” his buddy said, “and I bet it’s the smallest airport that jet has been into. He had to go around twice.”
“Yeah. Me too,” I added.
“Huh?”
I didn’t bother to explain.
