Description: The elevation in the river dropped below 2000’ as it passed by some more red cliffs. Just south of the river is the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site. This is the place General Custer attacked Black Kettle’s camp. Black Kettle was warned that the paleface was in the area, but believed that he would not attack without a conference because of the various peace treaties in effect. Custer attacked early in the morning with overwhelming force, destroying the camp. The event was highlighted in Tom Cruise’s movie “The Last Samurai” as the source of his nightmares of a massacre.
