Description:
The location of the Pine Bluff Arsenal (PBA) can be easily identified on the chart by the notation “NOTICE, FOR REASONS OF NATIONAL SECURITY PILOTS ARE REQUESTED TO AVOID FLIGHT AT AND BELOW 5000’ MSL”. Fortunately the area of the request did not cover the river.
PBA was built in 1941 as a chemical weapons manufacturing facility. It has produced millions of grenades, bombs, and shells filled with mustard gas and Lewisite (blister agents and lung irritants). It never produced the nerve agents, but it has (and is) used to store these compounds. It had a biological weapons mission, but that was terminated in 1969 by President Nixon.
This incinerator at Pine Bluff has been used to destroy chemical weapons in the U. S. stockpile. Just recently (May 2007) the last of more than 90,000 GB (nerve agent) filled rockets were destroyed. It is scheduled to process rockets filled with VX (nerve agent) captured from the Nazis this “Fall.” Imagine the excitement of handling sixty year old solid fuel rockets full of deadly nerve agent. Having previously spent some time wandering around among PBA’s ton containers full of instant death, I was happy to be in the air. It’s just one more reason to maintain the recommended 5000’ separation in an upwind direction.
