Description: After flying past the arsenal, I stopped for fuel at Free (0M0). I would have spent the night in nearby Dumas, but the courtesy car was locked up and there was no one in sight. It was a good excuse to press on.

Just before the Arkansas meets the Mississippi is the site of the first European settlement in the Mississippi valley. The French moved in with the natives in 1686 at the “Post de Arkansae.” French marines stationed there referred to the outpost as “the most disagreeable hole in the universe…”

It didn’t look that bad to me, but I didn’t have to stick around. It was time for me to turn south with the big river.
