Description: Not far from the battleground at Vicksburg is Natchez. Natchez is reported to have sustained only one casualty of war: one old guy had a heart attack when a gunboat fired a blank round to stir up their landlubbing compatriots.

There was another famous victim from Natchez. The local bishop was ordered by the Union to pray for President Lincoln. He refused and was promptly jailed. He remained defiantly imprisoned until the order was overturned on appeal in Washington.

There is a large population of antebellum homes that survive in Natchez. They were the domiciles of plantation owners who farmed the flatlands with slave labor across the river in Louisiana, but lived overlooking the land on the bluffs of Natchez. It’s sometimes beneficial to have separation from one’s work.
