I have quiet a bit of time in a PBY and the throttles were very comfortable. The one flying would push them up and the other one would take over as there was no boost on the controls. The throttle lock worked good also. It took 270 degrees of yolk to go from center to full travel of the ailerons. Papa Charlie

I envy you, P.C.! I've wanted to fly a PBY since I was a little kid. But I was thinking that the usual 'mission' is so different for SeaReys. Except for long trips, I make throttle adjustments frequently because of landing wherever I can, wandering around and up and down to look at things, and so on. So I like the standard SeaRey throttle position a lot. (I moved mine 1.5' forward, though, to accommodate the length of my forearm.)

It turns out, by the way, that this PBY is based only about 85 nm east of where I live. http://www.vbairport.com/index.php Gee--that's hardly more than a SeaRey hour down the James...

P.C. this video might take you back: http://www.catalina.org.uk/press-video/p2_articleid/20

It's of the Catalina Society's PBY practicing an airshow routine, with lots of in-flight shots in the cockpit, including some of the copilot adjusting the throttles while the pilot wrestles the wheel with both hands.

There are other stills and videos at their site, especially on this page: http://www.catalina.org.uk/catalina-latest-news

Wow! A PBY water takeoff from Lake Geneva (elev. 213 ft.) took 50 seconds: http://www.catalina.org.uk/press-video/p2_articleid/18

PC - did you tell me once that you did blind open-ocean landings in PBYs?

Ken;
We did open sea landings with no moon at night. No wind or sea conditions. About 2 miles from shore. Did what we came for and departed. Thiis was done more than once.
We had 8 JATO bottles for emergencies. It would get off almost as soon as they were fired. Yes it was exciting. Papa Charlie
PS All expenses paid by the guy that owned the Post Offices.

Don, I think installing overhead controls (throttle and enrichener) were the first mods we made to my SR. I've enjoyed them, and no, your arm doesn't get tired, as the throttle has a friction lock. I also think that the overhead looks cool.
