Dan -- A few words about the Teal. Designed and built in Elmira (where I've lived for the past 27 years) at Schweizer Aircraft. William (Bill) Schweizer, alive and well at age 90, is the sole remaining of the three Schweizer brothers. They were true early aviation pioneers who were not only fortunate enough to have witnessed aviation history in the making but have, over the last 70 years, contributed to its growth. They launched their 1st home-made glider in 1930, the 1st step of an aviation career that saw them build more than 6,500 aircraft! Bill Schweizer almost got killed in a Teal during the summer of 1972 when he and the manager of tooling and experimental projects took a flight following a modification of the retractable gear. During take-off on Seneca Lake (one of the Finger Lakes and where I have a small cottage and fly my SesRey) he describes hitting a swell, getting airborne and stalling nose first. He and the passinger got out with minor injuries but the plane sank in 600 ft. of water. It was later recovered by an experimental one man sub. One of my prize possessions is a painting Bill Schweizer composed of his Teal flying over Seneca Lake. He recently gave it to me with a matching painting of my plane N245WB also flying over Seneca Lake. His painting style would remind one of Grandma Moses, but they are unique and a real treasure from a great guy. Bill Bishop

I flew one a few years ago that I was thinking of buying. It was an enjoyable airplane. When we got back to the airport I noticed a repair on the cabin roof. The owner confessed he had once hit so hard on the water that the prop came through the roof, then everything sproinged back into place. As you can see in the picture, it's a long way from the pylon to the cabin. I passed on that one.

Bill,

As an active glider pilot for lo, these many years, I've spent some enjoyable moments with all the Schweizer brothers. I saw Bill in Memphis - looked fit as a fiddle! Wish I had known he was a seaplane pilot. Next time to Elmira, I'll check in with him.

Gene,
Fit as a fiddle is an excellent discription. I will be attending his 90th birthday in two weeks. Check in with me as well when you visit Elmira.
Bill Bishop
