Description: Oyster beds were exposed at low tide. That called to mind the sad saga of a fellow seaplane pilot’s encounter with the sharp shells.

A local pilot of light amphibians once ferried a Buc II through this area to its new owner. Somewhere over the vast marshes the little two cycle engine just quit. The emergency landing went well enough except for the loud grinding noises that accompanied the touch down. In his haste to get out of the stricken aircraft, the intrepid pilot jumped barefoot into the shallow waters. Thousands of razor sharp oyster shells exacted a price in blood for his trespass. The injured pilot eventually recovered and the plane was flown away.

Flying barefoot is almost always perfect in an amphibian. Almost always.
