Description:
Approaching Gulfport, MS, there was a decision to be made: go straight and true over land, or head out over open water to the thin sand strips of barrier islands. The barrier islands at the mouth of the Mississippi aren’t much of a barrier, but it is sometimes dry land.
There were many opportunities to land and explore the beaches. I had to remind myself that I was flying someone else’s airplane that wasn’t prepared for saltwater operations. I resisted. Barely.
My plan was to follow the islands south before intercepting the mouth of the Mississippi. The horrendous tailwinds were pushing me way too fast. Even at low power, however, it was apparent that my range wasn’t as long as my desire. The problem was exacerbated by the relative lack of non-aquatic landing areas out on the delta. Reluctantly I turned out across the sound towards an airport.
