Description: People come and go. The houses mostly go.

The people of coastal Louisiana live on one of the most dynamic landscapes possible. They are assaulted by flooding rivers and hurricanes. The constantly changing deltas bring or remove sand and mud, waves are in constant assault on the coast, and the entire place is subsiding.

Subsidence is cause by a variety of factors, including:
1. rising sea level
2. compaction of Holcene (recent) sediments
3. compaction of underlying Pleistocene and Tertiary sediments
4. down warping of the Mesozoic basin
5. down block faulting
6. hurricane and storm removal of barrier islands
7. oil extraction
8. upstream dams withholding sediments
9. levees containing flood sediments
10. shifting of deltas resulting in sediment loss.

(Of course some people blame global warming, others just blame President Bush. Me, I blame the Martians.)

Any one of these factors would be troublesome. All together they are down right depressing.

What is really depressing is that you and I are being forced to pay to bring people back there.
