Dennis
Yes ! I've been scouring through the magazine looking for mention of ME. Only saw it 3 times, 2 of the credits on the wrong pictures.
At least you can see JIB, sort of, on the front page. (you have to look in the sponson mirror to see it).
Great article anyway.
Dennis
Kudos for a great article, well written and photographed. Nothing but praise for the little bird. The only thing that it lacks is the actual final tally, or cost to buy and build this bird. I flew it in Florida, loved it. but would love a true handle of the projected cost from a builder of a well built and outfitted plane. Happy new year
Case Jansen

Dennis Vogan - Jan 08,2008 Viewers | Reply
Thanks Case! Depending on what equipment you install, you can count on about $60-65K as the starting point and sky's the limit from there. John told me what you're flying these days now but I forgot. I can tell you these are a lot of fun! Have you looked at flying Seareys for sale?

Dennis Scearce - Jan 08,2008 Viewers | Reply
Barnstormers has what looks like a deal from here. 2001, C hull, 914, electric gear for $40K.

Kenneth Leonard - Jan 08,2008 Viewers | Reply
Make sure that barnstormers doesn't have 1100 hours and a manually controlled turbo...if so, it's the factory trainer and you probably don't want it.

Don Maxwell - Jan 08,2008 Viewers | Reply
Dennis V., I think it can still be done for less than US$50,000. Roughly, it's about $30k for the kit+paint and $15k for the engine. That gets you basic VFR instruments. Add $2.5k for radio and transponder, and go flying. (Of course, that doesn't include the 100 grand you might spend on tool-toys, but they're optional.)

John Robert Dunlop - Jan 08,2008 Viewers | Reply
Try $18,498 now for a 912s, $1,200 for exhaust, $900 for prop and at least another 10% (of total) to cover unforeseen bits & pieces. Even with a deal on a partly built kit I am already up to $59,000 (but then I have a Dynon D180.)

Don Maxwell - Jan 08,2008 Viewers | Reply
Oh, yeah. I forgot about the exhaust and the prop and the price increase. So it's than $55k, then. (But jeez louise--that's about $20k more than 8 years ago!)

Frank A. Carr - Jan 10,2008 Viewers | Reply
Don, I think I spent $5k just at ACE Hardware!

I have a complete Excel Spreadsheet on cost, but I try not to look at it anymore!

I remember back in 1998 when I bought my (entire) Searey kit from Progressive Aerodyne for $19,900, 912S ROTAX for $12,500. and basic instruments for$1000. No more.
By the way- my cheap Go cart exaust has over 450 hr. ,'NO CRAKS' Secret-->install a support braket on central part of exhaust to the engine gear box. This way the entrie exhaust weight with it's inertia is not resting on the four hot elbows on those shaking startup's.

... and gas was $1.20 in 1998, and you could see a movie and have a steak &eggs breakfast for a nickel - oh wait, that was my grandpa.

Mark Alan MacKinnon - Jan 09,2008 Viewers | Reply
Still a bargain if you compare it to the new Chinese-built Skycatcher, the too-good-for-a-Rotax-so-now-it-has-a-Continental LSA plane from Cessna, starting at over $100,000 and will go up to $111,000 after it's first year. Yessir, order me two of them.

Frank A. Carr - Jan 10,2008 Viewers | Reply
I assume the article is not available 'on line'?

Dennis Vogan - Jan 10,2008 Viewers | Reply
It may be available but only to RAA members.

Will some dihedral help Searey stability? Adding 1/4' on each of the wing mout blocks seems like a quick way for this. Worh it? Anibody tried it?

Dan Nickens - Jan 10,2008 Viewers | Reply
Those are interesting questions, Ed, and perfect for discussion on the SeaRey Technical Site (STS). A re-invitation to the STS should be in your mail box shortly.

Super definative article emphasizing safety, quality work and innovation. Photography great and very explanative. Good looking confident pilot/builder. PA should compensate! In any case we benefit and learn, thank you Dennis.
