Description:
Flight planning for the trip down the east coast was easy: keep the ocean on the left wing. There was a bit of concern about the busy airspace (i.e. Boston, New York City, D.C.), but it had all been done before.
Not far from Taunton we found the ocean and some big ships. The Mighty Massachusetts sat quietly at the dock in Mount Hope Bay.
In November of 1942, it was anything but quiet as it bombarded the French battleship Jean Bart at its pier in Casablanca. When the smoke cleared, the Jean Bart was still born, two destroyers were sunk along with two merchant ships and the Casablanca docks were rubblized.
In 1943 she steamed into the Pacific and carried brought havoc with her. She ended the war by blasting the islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Stricken from the Navy’s roster in 1962 she was brought home to Fall River. Now she is part of a collection billed as “World’s largest collection of historic naval ships.”
See http://www.battleshipcove.org/bb59-history.htm for more of its service history.
