Description: The 2008 Georgian Bay SeaRey Gaggle itself was great fun. Maybe I'll get around to writing about it later on, but this is about the journey to and from. I'll just say that everything went fine on the Gaggle, except that I managed to kill two cameras. One got squashed by the landing gear mechanism when I put the wheels down to land at Down's Field in Shelburne, Ontario, where John Dunlop and Dennis Vogan have their hangar. After that only the shutter button worked. It would still take pictures, but everything else was dead--the zoom, the menus, the controls, all dead. The other camera drowned in Silver Lake.

After the Gaggle the weather turned foul--which was delightful because John and Ellen Dunlop took pity on us and put us up for two nights. But finally and reluctantly Carol and I had to head home.

John flew with us as far as Dave and Lynn Edward's place in Turtle Cove, on Lake Ontario near Picton (CNT7), where Lynn fed us all an excellent lunch and never once complained that three hungry travelers just dropped in on her, and Dave drove John and me to get gas.

Carol and I then headed east to Alexandria Bay, where Lake Ontario becomes the St. Laurence River and the Thousand Islands. I had crossed the border there once before at a US Customs officer's suggestion and knew that the FBO guy charged $12 for overnight tiedown and a ride into town and back in the morning, so that part was going to be easy.

But I was somewhat nervous about the crossing because the airplane's radio would transmit, but not receive, and I had to listen on a handheld radio. Fortunately, I'd been able to get a squawk code by telephone, so all I really had to do was establish radio contact with Trenton Terminal and activate our flight plan. That worked, and the border crossing was uneventful. We were not accompanied by F-16's or Blackhawks.
