Description:
Weather for the flight north was predicted to be “challenging” as a slow-moving front draped along the Appalachian Mountains. We left in the cool of the morning to try and miss afternoon convective activity. A stop for lunch in Adel slowed us down, however (a high security fence had been added to the sleepy airport since my last visit and we had to play like terrorists to get around it). Detours were in the afternoon flight plan.
Deviating close to Albany Class D airspace prompted a call to the local tower. “Do you have a transponder?” the controller asked.
“Yes, I’m at 090, 6 miles, 1500’ and my wingman is a half mile back.”
“I have only one target at 2000’,” he replied.
“That would be me,” Richard acknowledged.
Hmmm….the controller didn’t see my transponder. I had noticed my “Reply” light wasn’t very active. A transponder is required to cross the border into Canada. Oh, well. That was a worry for a future time (manana, por favor).
