Description: Icon brought their prototype fresh from its first flight. It was a seaplane only version, with few avionics, no lights or other frills, and missing much of anything that would add weight. A brief video of the flight showed as many of the problems as the successes of that first flight.

The prototype was said to weigh in at a disappointing 1000 pounds. Fifty pounds are associated with a very cool automatic wing folding mechanism. Word is you can’t get it in the amphib version because of the weight.

In a rare quiet moment I was able to engage the Icon chief engineer in a brief, but intense discussion. I came away impressed with his understanding of the challenges that await and his determination to make it all work out.

Here we go...

Maybe the Icon will evolve into a sensible and ordinary seaplane that is quite different than this unrealistic prototype.

While Dan's assessment is encouraging, I believe that initially enthusiasm will be limited to the Goofball With Money crowd of wannabees they seem to target.

The most hilarious event of the show was Walt Bates, with a gazillion hours of flying everything from SeaReys to the heaviest metal, engage in extended conversation with the booth bimbos about what he had to do to learn to fly one! What a letch!
