Thank you for helping me keep my cool Dan! Considering that I was second in line to leave at 7am the subsequent 4 hours of fumbling by the chiefs really did not make many others happy either. I think perhaps the most irritating part was Paul's blatant distortion of the FAA's restriction/control of the Seaplane Base and then his uneven application of his 'rules'... Thank you for diplomatically uncovering the FAA facts and also thanks to Darrell, Charlie, Gene and the many Seaplane Base 'volunteer indians' who cheerfully endured the bureaucracy every day!

The unreasonable delays you experienced was completely uncalled for, John, and I was impressed with your remarkable restraint. And you are right, not only did the 'base commander' distort the applicable regulations but he proved to be completely inconsistent in application of his flawed interpretations. This episode and another in which he lectured an experienced pilot on a topic he was completely unqualified to discuss proved to me that the Peter Principal is alive and well in volunteer endeavers too.

So is there a way to get this feedback back to the Airventure organizers so this particular Peter isn't there next year?

You guys are killing me. For those of that have never flown in to Vette, I have know idea what you're talking about. Is it a psuedo controlled field or something?

The Vette is a private seaplane base that is only open the week of the air show, Bret. It is run by EAA volunteers. Since it is a 'private' base, it is subject to restrictions the owner(s) may assert. These are not typically mandated by the FAA. In this case, however, there has to be some cooperation because the base is located within Oshkosh's airspace (Class D). According to the Notice to Airmen, there is a letter of agreement. This was denied, however, by the 'base commander.'<br /><br />Details of the many and varied incidents would best be provided by those most directly affected. I mostly witnessed the aftermaths. What I did see, however, causes me to believe that the 'Base Commander' is either unaware of the regulatory environment he works in or chooses to ignore it.<br /><br />Despite the general unpleasantries, there are some good people that volunteer there during the show. As you might guess, I'm especially appreciative of Charlie's hospitality.      Attachments:

There are the vast majority great people (working) Volunteering there then there are a few that have let there years of service go to there heads as they moved up the seniority list. I had a great time working there but will most likely not go back. I saw departure times and dock space moved up so ' friends' could get out first.<br />I was one of the lucky ones as I got to work with Gene most of the time.<br /><br />A DC. bumper sticker <br />' Politicians and Diapers need to be changed for the same reason'

Charlie,<br /><br />And the same right back to you! It's really a pleasure to have another Searey guy there to commiserate with. <br /><br />I'm sorry that there is so much chatter re the quality of the seaplane base at OSH. As someone mentioned, the base does cater to larger planes since it is set up nicely for them, and not so nicely for flying boats - large or small. Since it is a private lagoon, it isn't the easiest thing to just build another ramp - room is definitely limited.<br /><br />As one of the volunteers, I invite any and all Searey guys to come back and I'll do my darndest to insure your treatment is as good as we can do.<br />
