Description: If you happen to be near Norfolk, Virginia, head for the town of Pungo and turn south until you get to this 4000 foot turf runway.

(Unfortunately, it's a private airport, and we're invited NOT to land on it because, I was told, their insurance company would be displeased.

Looks a lot like 'Fantasy of Flight' between Tampa & Orlando... Lots of eggs in one basket (hanger) though.

This one is flight without the fantasy, Ken. Like F of F, the place is owned by one guy with deep pockets, but his philosophy is different from Kermit Weeks'. Apparently, his idea is not to just park the airplanes in a hangar for rubes to gawk at. They all get flown regularly. I think this is where at least some of the money comes from: http://www.aviationmaintenance.edu/

Kermit flies many of his planes regularly, but not all. I'm glad there are folks out there who have the deep pockets and the love of vintage planes. But Kermit let us land a bunch of our Seareys there for a gaggle!

I phoned the airport manager last November to ask for permission to land there. Said my SeaRey is very gentle, loves grass, and so on. Nope, the guy said. Insurance company would have a fit. When I drove there last week, the woman who took my ten bucks at the door said that they don't usually give permission to land. So naturally I asked what would happen if someone just... landed. Would the police or FAA be involved? She laughed. No, she said, but they'd present that someone with a letter. She didn't say what the contents of the letter might be.

It's the best turf runway I've ever seen.

Ah yes, the old 'insurance company' excuse, real or not, is often used when someone just doesn't want to let you do something.
