Claytor Lake (where I am based) is 1850 MSL. We have had the hang glider at 2500 feet AGL under tow. Much higher than I typically fly the Searey.

Here is an altitude profile of one of our hang glider flights. I have a watch (La Crosse K2-100) which will record altitude readings at periodic intervals. Here I had it set to record at 5 second intervals and zero was set to lake level<!-- >'">
' or > missing in user HTML. That suggests a glide rate of roughly -250 fpm. At--what--20 mph? If that's close, then the glide distance is maybe 3.5 miles, or 18,000 feet, for a glide ratio of better than 7 to 1. Not bad for a kite.

Not much lift that day, eh?

Speed is more like 26 mph, Don, for a glide ratio of 9 : 1. This is flying the tandem kite solo, so it is a light wing loading resulting in a low decent rate.

We rarely get lift on Claytor Lake. Steve, my hanglider bud, says that with a 10kt NW breeze, they can soar the ridge at Smith Mountain lake as long as they like.
