Description: The sight of running water, a mountain lake and a snow covered peak was cause for a slight inland diversion. I had planned to stop at Fairchild International Airport to check the weather, but the view outside was just too good to stop.

Mount Carrie is part of the Olympic Mountains on the north side of the Olympic National Park. Because of the ability of the mountains to drain snow from moist Pacific air, six glaciers are still present in the park. One is on Mt. Carrie.

Then there is the matter of the “Olympic Hot Springs” shown on the aeronautical chart. The juxtaposition of cold and hot was interesting enough, but the absolute prohibition of nudity in the springs by park proclamation was “revealing” too.

The hot springs are actually seeps that vary from lukewarm to really warm (almost 140 F). The Native Americans figured out why there are two in this area (another one is called Sol Duc). According to their investigators: “Two 'dragon-like creatures' (lightning fish) with a mutual hatred for one another engaged in a mighty and desperate baffle. There was no victor as both were evenly matched. Admitting defeat each of the creatures crawled into their separate caves where they still weep hot tears of mortification.”

Modern geologists are a much more mundane lot. They simple attribute it to the Calawash fault zone that gave form to the Elwah river valley.

In keeping with their general mundane-ness, the geologists claim the Olympic Mountains are young at the age of fifteen or twenty million years old. I suppose it’s all a matter of perspective.

Though I was tempted, I didn’t slip into the park or the mountain lake. After all, Peter & Paula expected me to get the airplane back to Florida sometime during the current geologic era.
