Description:
You might think, Peter & Paula, that I was just out having fun flying around with Peli. Oh, no. Would you believe that just after arrival over Copalis Beach I heard a strange rumbling that required immediate investigation? Thinking only of the preservation of Peli, I made a precautionary landing.
Fortunately I was over the beachfront airport (Copalis State, S16). As it turns out, it was only my stomach. It was getting close to lunchtime. (Whew! Another close call!)

Whew! Dan, it's good that the rumbling turned out to be benign. This page on the State of Washington website says that Bad Things could happen if you had stayed there until the next high tide: <a href="http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/aviation/AllStateAirports/CopalisBeach_CopalisState.htm">http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/aviation/AllStateAirports/CopalisBea<br>ch_CopalisState.htm</a><br /><br />It also makes this surprising statement: '...Copalis ... is the only known beach airport in the United States, and is the only stretch of ocean beach in Washington where landing is legal.'<br /><br />Is that so--the only known beach airport in the US? (I don't know of any others.) And what about the legality of landing on ocean beaches in other states? Does anyone know if it's legal anywhere? (I presume 'legal' means when there's no rumbling that must be investigated.)<br />

I don't know of any others, Don. Most states prohibit aircraft from landing off airports without the permission of the landowner. Have you checked out the Backcountry Pilot website? There is a discussion of this very topic there (see attached link).

Thanks, Dan. The majority opinion there seems to be: Ask the owner first. The second choice is: Forgiveness is easier to get than permission. That's about the same advice as we get about landing in lakes and rivers. It would be a lot easier if there were 'No Landing' signs.

So, Dr Maxwell, if there is a 'No Landing' sign, then it is off limits. Otherwise, go for it! Thanks for the lesson. Clears it up for me!

If someone complains that you landed illegally on the beach, just tell them it's a seaplane and you landed in the tidal area of the beach. Stick firmly to the fact that as tidal area, it's legal for a seaplane. If you can't beat them with facts, baffle them with BS.
