“Check it out: that’s Gertabong’s Garden.”
“No it’s not. It’s just an erosional remnant from a higher sea level.”
“Yeah, you might think that, but the Ice Age people knew better. You see, before they left on their long journey across the Bering Strait, Gertabong was Chief Walks Afar’s new wife. She did not want to leave her home to come to the new land.”
“Some people should just stay at home.”
“Yeah, but Walks Afar believed that they had to migrate to the land of the giant trees and woolly mammoths. He had seen it in a vision revealed to him by Notsomuch, the god of mass mischief.”
“Notsomuch.”
“Yep. Walks Afar pleaded with Gertabong to come with him. She refused. ‘I won’t leave my beautiful herb garden behind,’ she wailed and moaned.
“Not knowing what else to do, Walks Afar pleaded with Notsomuch to show him the way. Notsomuch was much displeased by the people’s dalliance, but he promised Walks Afar that he would relocate Gertabong’s garden to the new land where it would prosper forevermore.”
“Uh, huh.”
“And so it came to pass after many long years, Walks Afar and Gertabong landed upon the great plain that was this bay. Gertabong planted her herbs and they grew strong. In fact, they got so strong that no one would eat them. Gertabong abandoned her garden and died a bitter woman.”
“That would have been my guess.”
“Notsomuch’s promise did not die with Gertabong. While the land around it fell away, Gertabong’s garden remained. To this very day you can get some really strong grassy herbs from on top of this spot.”
“I think you must have been smoking some of them.”
