Description: At the mouth of the Columbia River is a rugged cape that has been wrongly named. It was called “Cape Disappointment” by an Irish scoundrel that went under the title of “Captain John Meares.” In 1788 he was looking for the mouth of the Columbia River and ran into a sandbar instead.

Meares considered his failure to make the whole area a disappointment. Never mind that he had been sailing under forged papers and had killed half his crew the year before because of his ineptitude. A few years later he published a self-promoting book about his heroic exploits of exploration full of fabrications. His crazy claims almost lead to a war.

(There is probably a lesson somewhere there about being careful what you write about!)

The cape was no disappointment to me. Judging by the inland clouds, it became my Cape of Validation. I was now in a position to fly down the Columbia River low over the water and under the clouds, making way for progress to the east. Cape Validation or Vindication would work just fine for me.
