Description:
Nearing Walla Walla the ridges were lined with wind turbines. I needed some good old gasoline to keep going, so I headed direct to Walla Walla Regional. After fueling the airplane I decided that I had had enough fun for one day.
“What a SeaRey-splendid day! One more day done and one less to go. If there are more like this to come, I won’t want to quit.”
Over a late dinner, I added it all up: Skagit to Sikeu, 1.7 hours Sikeu to Copalis Beach, 1.8 hours Copalis Beach to Hoquim, 0.5 hours Hoquim to Yale Lake Yale Lake to Columbia River at Umatilla Columbia River to Walla Walla, 4.5 hours Or a total of 8.5 hours.
“That’s full-of-fun workday for anyone.”
“Until you figure that the straight line distance is only 220 nm, which would only be a three hour flight at 70 knots. So much for the concept of diverting for weather in a SeaRey!”
“It’s no fair comparing a straight line distance because you can’t just go straight over the mountains and through the clouds!”
“You didn’t mind going through the Indian Heaven Wilderness.”
“That was different….it was only a short distance and it was safer than flying through town.”
“It sounds like situational routing to me.”
“Well, this ain’t no scheduled airline.”
“You got that right.”
