Description:
My master plan had me getting out in front of the low pressure system that had been forecast to move into the northwest overnight. With the clear skies the afternoon before, I was feeling confident when I went to bed.
The view from the hotel room the next morning told a different story. It was gray and getting grayer.
The Weather Channel map concurred. Rain was forecast for eastern Washington.
I got a weather briefing on line. It allowed me to see what I wanted to see without talking to a briefer who would be inevitably glum.
The radar showed rain to the east. That was too bad, because I had planned to fly to Lewiston and follow the Snake River south though the mountains.
Plan B was to make a break to the south and catch the Powder River valley to the Snake River. The radar showed that was still possible, but the rain was on the move.
Plan C would be to hole up in the hotel and wait for good weather. According to the forecast, that would be several days in the future.
With the suspect weather forecast, I decided to file a flight plan with the FAA, My Spot tracker had failed me the day before. Instead of showing my path, it only showed my starting point. A quick glance at the manual showed I had pushed the wrong button to start (or rather not pushed the right button long enough).
By the time the airplane was loaded and untied, a gentle rain had started. The hills to the west were obscured in dark clouds and rain. The way south looked miserable too. The only way around had me backtracking to the west.
“I’ll give it a go,” I decided. “I can always turn back or put it down in a different town.”
