Description: After the town of Gypsum, the Colorado River turns north but the road keeps going east following the Eagle River into the Sawatch Range. The Sawatch is the central part of the Rocky Mountains with the highest peak (Mt. Elbert) and eight of the 20 highest peaks in the Rockies. It also marks the Continental Divide with the Eagle River running west and water near Leadville running south and east with the Arkansas River.

In addition to the rocky obstacles, cumulus clouds were starting to poke up above the peaks. Much more ominously, F-16s and a massive 40 mile wide Restricted Area loomed to the east at Denver due to a big donkey convention.

Dan, taking the route that you followed eastbound, what was your highest MSL altitude?

    Nothing over 12000', Frank.
