Description: The characteristic “U” shape indicates that this valley was once scoured by a glacier. It is long gone now. This glaciation was confined to the mountains and didn’t enter the Arkansas River Valley.

The scraping of the ice and the river’s erosion did reveal the inner igneous core of the Rockies. The town of Granite gets its name from the 1.7 billion year old granite exposed on the western side of the Mosquito Range.

Between Leadville and Granite the wind completely changed directions. The strong southerly wind made for a headwind slowing Peli’s progress to a meager 60 mph. “Pity poor Peter & Paula’s pocketbook!” But not me. I was not wanting to get back on the ground.
