Description: The Arkansas River cuts deeply into Precambrian rocks to create a canyon 1200’ deep. The even upper surface is part of an old peneplain and represents a stable interval in the many mountain building periods.

In the bottom of the gorge the river careens over boulders. Along side the raging stream is a railroad track. There was something of a legal battle in the late 1800’s between two different railroads to get the right to build the tracks up to the mines at Leadsville. The “Royal Gorge War” was settled in 1880 in favor of t the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. You can still get a train ride through the canyon.

My stomach was anything but stable flying over the dramatic canyon. The rough air played with the airplane. On the edge of the plain at the top was a huge swing. You’d have to be totally crazy to swing out over the gorge!

Therefore, it would be safe for the reader to assume that you're not into bungee jumping either?

You raise an interesting point (I'm sure intentionally) about risk and managing risk Dan. One can be thought to be 'totally crazy to swing over the gorge' (presumably on a secure and pre-tested rope), but another is not totally crazy to fly over the gorge in an experimental aeroplane.

When I was younger and stupider, Frank, I stepped off a cliff near Queenstown, New Zealand attached to a bungee cord. I won't do it again....unless someone double dog dares me to.

Bill Kitchen, a SeaRey owner and seaplane enthusiast, has several adrenaline-rich adventure 'rides' on Orlando's tourist row, including a giant swing, bungee jump and vertical wind tunnel. I had to practice in his wind tunnel for getting my free fall parachute rating but he couldn't convince me to visit his other 'just-for-fun' 'attractions.'

This ride is called Royal Gorge SkyCoaster and has a 100 foot drop.
I have been on the same ride here at Carowinds (xtreme skyflyer), but it has a 150 foot drop, although it is not on the edge of a gorge.

This ride scares the crap out of me. It is a blast. Keep in mind that I found a tandem skydive from 14,000 feet to be rather boring and unexciting.

The extreme skyflyer is the only ride that gives me the 'scare your underwear brown' adrenaline.

Bungee might do it, but I refuse to try bungee - to me, something just seems 'wrong' about it.... I mean, its a damn rubber band! Those are for holding stacks of envelopes in a bundle.

Heres a decent view of how the Royal Gorge SkyCoaster works:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Le2s6FnlRM&NR=1

I'll skip the ride, but it's a very nice walk over the bridge.
