Description: The fourth day of Peli’s homeward odyssey was delayed due to aircraft on display at the Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum. Surely Peter & Paula would understand the irresistible attraction of a field of great airplanes parked right next to the airport!

The old Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar looked forlorn in its new role as a Not-Flying Birdhouse. Its current condition belays the excellent service it provided to the USAF from 1949 to its retirement in 1974. It was then used as a tanker for fire fighting duty. After a series of crashes the type was retired in 1987. In a complicated transaction the aircraft was swapped to many museums in exchange for C130s and P-3 Orions from Davis Monthan’s Air Force aircraft boneyard.

As a result of the transactions civilians ended up with the more modern military aircraft for as little as $15,000 (though they were later valued at between $750,000 and $1.5 million). Some of the airplanes ended up involved in drug deals and there were allegations that the CIA was involved in others.

The ostentatiously styled “Historic Aircraft Exchange Program” ended up with two of the principals in jail. After the malfeasance it was involved in came to light, the Forest Service sued to get the airplanes back. The case actually went to trial in 2007 and the government lost the cases because the purchasers had “acted in good faith.”
