Description: Out on the plains by the river was an adobe fortress: Bent’s Fort. Back in the day it was a trading post out on the wild frontier. It was built by some entrepreneurs in 1833 as a trading post. The armored mall sat strategically on the Santa Fe trail near the border with Mexico and some 600 miles from the nearest town in Missouri. When it was built it was the only major outpost between Missouri and Mexican settlements near Santa Fe, New Mexico.

During its short existence, the famous scout Kit Carson worked as a hunter for the fort from 1831 to 1842. When war was declared on Mexico in 1846 it served as a staging area for the American “Army of the West.”

It was abandoned in 1849 under murky circumstances. One account had it captured by local indigenous tribes. It is also theorized that one of the owners, Mr. Bent, blew it up when the Army refused to pay him what he thought would be a fair price for the facility. In any case, the structure was totally obliterated only to be resurrected in the twentieth century as a tourist attraction.
